On Monday (31 March), six kiwi from Cape Sanctuary were released into the Kaweka Forest Park as part of Save the Kiwi’s Kōhanga Kiwi Programme.
We happened upon a group of local school children visiting Cape Sanctuary on our way out, so Liz from Cape Sanctuary took the opportunity to show them a kiwi.
On the Kaweka side, three of the kiwi were microchipped, and four fitted with transmitters at the SOKK base in Puketitiri before heading into the forest and being released into their new back yard.
Shout out to Cape Sanctuary, Save the Kiwi, Dept. of Conservation and our awesome Save our Kaweka Kiwi management team and volunteers on this fantastic collaboration!
The Kōhanga Programme allows for up to 100 kiwi to be transferred to the Kawekas from now until 2032. In addition, we have approval to exchange up to 20 chicks with Cape Sanctuary for genetic purposes from now until 2030.
