Save Our Kaweka Kiwi Project
In 2002 it was discovered that predation of kiwi chicks by stoats and dogs had reduced the number of kiwi in Hawke’s Bay to approximately 1,000. Without active management it was likely that kiwi in the locality would be extinct within 10 years.
In response, ECOED initiated the Save Our Kaweka Kiwi Project.
The long-term objectives of this project are to:
maintain and enhance our local kiwi population
use kiwi to promote environmental and outdoor education.
