It’s been a busy start to September for our volunteers, with two nest raids and a trip to the Gallagher kiwi hatchery in Taupō.
Robyn and Fi completed the raid on Mr JC’s nest, while Tipene, Krysten, Dave and Deb tracked down Mākāhu.
In total three eggs were retrieved from the Kaweka Forest Park on Monday – one from Mr JC and two from Mākāhu, although a candle test on Mākāhu’s eggs back in Napier revealed they are very young despite his tracker telling us he’d been nesting for 65 days! Fingers crossed the incubation in Taupō goes smoothly and we have three healthy chicks to raise in the safety of the creche.
There’s just enough time for a quick breather before the next raids on Spike and Blew’s nests in the third week of September.
Nesting season always gets a bit hectic, but the more eggs and chicks we can bring out of the forest and into the safety of the creche at Lake Opouahi the better.
